How to study radiotelephony
- Learn the shape of each call first
- Who you are calling, who you are, where you are, what you want. Most errors are items in the wrong place or missing, not wrong words.
- Say it out loud
- Reading phraseology silently is not the same skill as transmitting it. Practise speaking, even when you type in the simulator.
- Read back values, not sentences
- Runway, heading, level, QNH, frequency and squawk are what must come back. The words around them can vary.
- Revisit mistakes on a schedule
- A question you missed today is worth more tomorrow and next week than a new one now. Let spaced revision handle the timing.
Official and reference sources
These are the documents our explanations cite. Always use the current official version, and rely on the regulator’s website for examination rules, fees and schedules. Where we have not been able to verify a document’s final text, we say so.
ICAO document
International Civil Aviation Organization
Cited for the spelling alphabet and the medical-transport urgency signal (PAN PAN followed by MAY-DEE-CAL). The medical-transport provision was confirmed via EU/UK SERA.14095, which transposes it; check the current Annex 10 edition before citing paragraph numbers.
Regulation
Directorate General of Civil Aviation, India, Draft circulated September 2025 — verify the final issue, 2025
Exam parameters (50 MCQs, 70% written pass mark, ~30-minute practical, 50% practical pass mark) were reported from the draft by secondary sources. Not verified against the final CAR.
ICAO document
Manual of Radiotelephony (Doc 9432-AN/925)
International Civil Aviation Organization, Fourth edition, 2007
Cited by section only; text is not reproduced (obtain a licence from ICAO before ingesting full text). Section numbers and the facts cited were checked against the 4th-edition text on 13 Oct 2026 — see docs/DOC9432_VERIFICATION.md. The project's scanned copy has no text layer, so the check used a text copy of the same edition.
ICAO document
Procedures for Air Navigation Services — Aircraft Operations (PANS-OPS, Doc 8168), Volume III
International Civil Aviation Organization
Cited for Mode A codes 7500 (unlawful interference), 7600 (communication failure) and 7700 (emergency). Paragraph references are from secondary quotations of Vol III and must be checked against the current edition.
Regulation
Radio Telephone Operator (Restricted) Certificate and Licence Rules, 2025
Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, 2025
Notified 25 June 2025 per secondary reporting. Verify the Gazette text before citing specific rules.
